4th Sunday After Epiphany Devotional

Good morning 5th Ave. Family & Friends,

Due to last night and today’s inclement weather, we cancelled in-person worship this morning. Our worship service was recorded yesterday and we hope you will be uplifted, encouraged and inspired on this 5th Sunday of January 2021.

Those who listen to Jesus’s words will be strong. Jesus says that the wise person built their house upon a firm and solid foundation that allowed for their house to be able to withstand the brutal storm that thrashed against it. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew strongly against the house, but it did not fall because its foundation allowed for it to stand firm.

Three bricklayers are asked: “What are you doing?”

The first says, “I am laying bricks.”

The second says, “I am building a church.”

And the third says, “I am building the house of God.”

The first bricklayer has a job. The second has a career. The third has a calling.

On this 5th Sunday of January, as we welcome the second month of 2021, I want to talk to you about the most unusual home builder there ever was, someone who has built his house out of something even stranger than cans and tires. And after putting these strange building materials together, he is still living in this house to this very day. The person I am talking about is Jesus Christ. He is the master home builder. He has built for himself a home to live in, and that home is called the Holy Christian Church. And he has chosen the most unusual building material there is to build his house – he has chosen you. You are his building material According to the Bible; you are a brick in the house of God.

Why would Jesus want to make his house out of people? Today we are going to utilize music, spoken voice, singing, visualization, and the preached word as we see how Jesus does it, how you, yes you disciples of Christ are a brick in the house of God.

All of us are being built together by God. One brick at a time, he is turning you and me into a place where he lives by his Spirit. On this wintery Wisconsin morning, you are God’s house. His address is on your forehead. When Christians gather together (even virtually) and hear his Word and live his Word in their lives, when that happens, God is living among us, by his Spirit. You 5th Ave, UMC are bricks in the most amazing house ever built.

With zeal and grace, go into all the world and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ.

O God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Your humble Pastor-servant leader,

Pastor Clarissa
